The Pennsylvania Railroad's Iconic GG-1
Fifteen production GG-1 locomotives and the prototype were preserved in museums. None are operational, due to
difficulties with running their transformers.

PRR 4927/Amtrak 4939 — Illinois Railway Museum, Union, Illinois
PRR 4933/Amtrak (4)926 — Central New York Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, Syracuse, New
York. It has been cosmetically restored and is on display at the NYS Fairgrounds Historic Train Exhibit.
PRR 4935 / Amtrak 4935 — Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Strasburg, Pennsylvania (nicknamed "Blackjack")
Union Pacific "Big Boy" Locomotives
Of the 25 Big Boy locomotives manufactured, eight remain. Seven of the eight surviving Big Boys are on static display.
One, number 4014, is undergoing a restoration to operating condition for excursion service which includes conversion to
No. 5 oil firing. Five are displayed outdoors without protection from the elements; 4005 and 4017 are displayed
indoors. The remaining Big Boy locomotives are located throughout the United States:
4004: Holliday Park, Cheyenne, Wyoming N 41.13675, W 104.79983
4005: Forney Transportation Museum, Denver, Colorado N 39.777050, W 104.97050 , The Forney Transportation
Museum in Denver moved 4005 to a renovated building in January 2001.
4006: Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, Missouri N 38.572147, W 90.46111
4012: Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, Pennsylvania N 41.407488,
W 75.66966 – Built in November 1941, Union Pacific retired 4012 in 1962. 4012 was on display at Bellows Falls,
Vermont until 1984 when it was moved to Steamtown, USA in Scranton, Pennsylvania 4012 is displayed outdoors
since the Steamtown turntable and roundhouse are inadequate for 4012's size. The Steamtown SHS recommended
that due to its good condition, No. 4012 could be feasibly restored to working order but only after determining if
surrounding "track, switches, culverts, trestles, bridges, wyes, turntables and other facilities could bear her great
4014: Union Pacific Railroad, Cheyenne, Wyoming N 34.08346, W 117.76982 - Reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013
and moved from its static display in Fairplex Rail Giants Museum in Pomona California to be restored to full steam
operation and operated in excursion service.
4017: National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin N 44.48408, W 88.04863. No. 4017 now resides in a
4018: Museum of the American Railroad, Frisco, Texas N 33.14451, W 96.83344. No. 4018 was part of the
museum's collection at its former location in Dallas, Texas, and was relocated by rail to the museum's new location
north of Dallas in Frisco, Texas on August 25, 2013.
4023: Kenefick Park, Omaha, Nebraska N 41.23213, W 95.91780. Number 4023 is the only known Big Boy to
move by highway since preservation, to Kenefick Park in Omaha.
Union Pacific Challenger Locomotives
Two examples of the Challenger class locomotive survive today: Union Pacific 3985, which remains in operating condition
and is used for excursion services by Union Pacific, and Union Pacific 3977, which is on static display on Cody Park at
North Platte, NE.
As of May 2016, the 3985 is down indefinitely for repairs, placed third in line behind 844 and 4014 in the
restoration order. 844 and 4014 is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and 2019 respectively, but no date for 3985
has been given.
